Career advice that also doubles as dating advice

Career advice that also doubles as dating adviceCareer advice that also doubles as dating adviceYou spend hours getting ready to meet a stranger, hoping youll connect with them. And maybe, theyll like you- and hopefully, youll dig em too. You consider what youll talk about, where youll meet and research what you have in common. Youve been down this road before, and you know it is unpredictable where it will lead. You battle through the nerves and work up the courage to keep at it, no matter how many times youre rejected. Are you dating - or applying for a job?Often times, the process of finding someone you want to spend hours with, regardless if its romantic or professional, is grueling and difficult. Thats why so much of the wise words of wisdom about falling in love also apply to scoring an offer letter for your dream gig. Here, dating experts and love gurus give their best tipsDress to impressCareer and branding expert Wendi Weiner the saying dress for the job you want is relevan t for both an upcoming interview or meet-and-greet with a potential partner. Though traditional perceptions toward dress code are shifting more and more casual in most industries, it is still important to present yourself professionally when youre vying for a position. When it comes to interviews, what you wear to an interview is just as important as how you act during the interview. Remember, the interviewers first impression of you will be made in less than 60 seconds, she shares.Know your boundaries and limitsWe all have deal breakers in every aspect of your life, whether it is what youre willing to give in a friendship, settle for in terms of salary or compromise about where youll live. Psychologist Yvonne Thomas, Ph.D., explains knowing your boundaries and limits is an important skill set, for both love and career, since it shows emotional health. If you voice your concern about something serious at work or with your significant other and nothing is done about it, you need to k now if and when its time to end the relationship or the job, she says.Be boldWhen there is something you really want, what measures are you willing to take to get there? And what does it take to reach the goal? Couples therapist Sarah Schewitz says those who dare to be bold are more likely to reap the success and the experiences they desire. If you want to progress to the next level in your relationship or your job, you need to ask. Employers will often give you a raise if you ask for one but they are a lot less likely to give you one if you dont. Much the same, if you want to go from casually dating to being exclusive, say something, she continues. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.Be yourselfIf you cant actually complete the technical skills listed for a job, but get it, how steep will the learning curve be? And how long will it take you to perform at an impressive level? On the same token, if you arent authentic with the rolle youre newly dating, it makes it might difficult to bu ild trust and connection. Sexpert Coleen Singer says more than anything else, being yourself is solid advice, no matter what youre talking about. Everyone wants to put their best foot forward, but if taken too far, your real self will eventually shine through and when it falls short of what you initially presented, disappointment will ensue and damage your relationship with both your career interactions or your dating relationships, she explains.Listen and hearNo one wants to spend an evening with someone who only wants to talk about themselves. And no one wants to hire someone who is purely selfishly motivated. Branding and neuro human behavior expert Ali Craig stresses the importance of not only listening, but hearing what people are saying, in work and in life. Most of us half listen to others while were distracted by thoughts about our next response. Instead, stop and hear what the other party is really saying. Hear the tone, be conscious of the non-verbal cues they are sending, and truly listen to every word so that you fully understand their position before you weigh in with yours, she continues. Not only will being a good listener decrease the likelihood of a misunderstanding, it will also give you greater insights, clarity, and ideas about how to move forward.Trust the processPatience is one of the biggest pills to swallow, especially when a job search or the quest for someone to marry feels endless and at times, hopeless. Weiner says both dating and applying for jobs requires practice. And sometimes, that means striking out half a dozen (or even a hundred) times before finally getting it right. Interviewing is a learned skill and one of the most important for career success. Dating is also about practice. Your resume is only as good as your ability to convey it in person, and the same thing goes for a first date. The interview is your opportunity to allow your personality to shine and show why you are the perfect candidate for the position, she explai ns.Dont move too fastTheres something alluring about that head-over-heels feeling. The rush of emotions, the flood of connection - its enough to make anyone want to dive headfirst into a relationship. And the same goes for a shiny job offer thats double what youre making now. In both situations though, remember to think carefully, consider smartly and well, be picky. You want to interview the company as much as they are interviewing you. A slower process can be a good thing, Weiner notes. It allows both parties to really consider if they are the right fit - and the same goes for dating. A slow natural progression is always best. If a company offers you a job on the spot, it can scream desperation. The same goes for dating.

6 New Year Goals for the Job Seeker

6 New Year Goals for the Job Seeker6 New Year Goals for the Job SeekerGet better sleep, join a gym, practice mindfulness, simply have more fun. As you make resolutions to improve your life, you might also find yourself setting some new year goals around your career, including exploring the employment market. But you cant simply wish your way to a more fulfilling career. You have to work at it.Yes, the market for skilled professionals may be sizzling hot, but that doesnt mean you can jump in cold. To help you find a position that matches your skills, experience and interests in 2019, start working toward these six job search goals nowGoal 1 Update your resume and LinkedIn profileYou can probably think of a million things youd rather be doing than writing a resume. But youll do yourself a favor if you have an up-to-date document at your fingertips. One mistake people frequently make is to wait to revise their resume until they find a job that interests them. That prevents them from appl ying for the position right away. And by the time they have an updated version ready to submit, it may be too late. So, dont delay. While youre at it, review your LinkedIn profile and make sure it reflects your most recent professional accomplishments. Your profile is essentially your erreichbar resume, and many employers search for candidates on LinkedIn as part of their recruiting efforts. You want your profile to reflect the same information as your traditional resume.Another advantage of having a polished LinkedIn profile? Recruiters often use LinkedIn to help identify passive job binnenseekers. If you maintain a solid online profile, youll increase the likelihood that a recruiter will take a closer look at you.WE CAN HELP YOU FIND YOUR NEXT JOBGoal 2 Strengthen your skill setEven in a candidate-driven job market, you need to do whatever you can to gain an advantage over your fellow job seekers. One way is to learn a new skill or earn a certification. No matter your chosen indust ry or career, change is happening all around you. Your skill set may need a boost to remain relevant and attractive to employers.Pursuing professional development shows schritte and a commitment to learning, as well as an understanding of what it takes to excel in your field. It also makes it easier for you to answer the question that all hiring managers are likely to ask in one form or another How can you add value to the organization?Possessing certain abilities and credentials can also help you negotiate a higher salary. (Robert Halfs Salary Guides offer insight into how much more employers are willing to pay professionals with in-demand skills and certifications for certain roles.)Goal 3 Look for a job that makes you happyNow is a good time to assess your professional and personal goals and determine exactly what you are looking for in a new job. What would make you happy?A bigger paycheck? A fancier title? The opportunity to work at a top firm in your field? All these things ar e nice, no doubt. They can probably contribute to your on-the-job happiness, as well. But are they more important to your overall satisfaction than a shorter commute? Or an invigorating organizational culture? Or the potential to advance quickly?Develop a clear picture in your mind of what would make you happiest and allow you to reach the new year goal youve set of securing a new job. Without a clear idea of what this job looks like, youll have trouble finding the right fit.Goal 4 Audit your online presenceYou can assume all potential employers will review your LinkedIn profile. Some will also look at other channels to see if they can form a more complete picture of you as a candidate. Consider how you present yourself on social media and online forums. You may need to do some digital housecleaning.Make sure all information is current and accurate and presents you in the best possible light. If theres anything you wouldnt want a potential employer to see - photos from a recent vac ation or your unfiltered thoughts about a sports teams poor performance, for example - review your privacy settings.Goal 5 Expand your professional networkIf you expect to find a new role simply by sitting in front of the computer and looking for jobs online, youd better rethink your strategy. In addition to submitting applications through recruiting sites and job boards, you need to work on expanding your professional network - both online and offline. The latter is especially important.Events held by professional organizations, conferences, trade shows and employer-hosted open houses are just some of the places where you can build your professional network. These gatherings provide the opportunity for you to meet people in person - including hiring managers and recruiters - and begin to form strong relationships with contacts who may be able to assist in your search.Goal 6 Be persistent as you pursue your new year goalsDespite the tight labor market, employers still want to be sure a job candidate is a good fit for the position and company culture before extending an offer. Even if youre one of their top candidates, it may take weeks and several rounds of interviews before you hear back about the final decision. But that doesnt mean you should simply wait around until an employer makes up their mind. Stay in contact with the hiring manager. Dont stop networking. Continue to apply for other jobs. Build a relationship with a recruiting professional. After all, nothing is certain until youve signed on the dotted line.As for your other resolutions? Definitely have more fun. Tags

They can Provide evidence of work that youve done. Illustrate your skills and abilities. Show the quality of your work. A portfolio is a way to organize and present your skills, projects, training and education. It allows you to display your best work. It also can provide a way to tell the story of your career and the challenges you have overcome. If you are looking into several types of jobs, then you may need more than one portfolio. Read below to learn about the types of portfolios you might want to create for yourself. Then visit Work samples to learn about samples you m ight want to include. Paper portfolios For a paper portfolio, begin with a loose-leaf binder with divider The first page can be a fresh copy of your resume. Or place that in a pocket in the front cover. Include a table of contents. This makes it easier for both you and the prospective employer to find items quickly. Display the rest of the content in clear page protectors. Group your work samples into logical categories. For example, you could organize by the specific skills used, the type of project, or product line. How you organize your portfolio is up to you, but make sure you label each item. Explain what each item is, your involvement, and the skills you used. If possible, use color copies or colored paper to add visual appeal. Another option is to include partial samples of your work and offer full versions if the interviewer requests them. Besides work samples, there are a number of other items you could include in your portfolio Employer/industry infor mation (articles on the interviewer, employer, and industry) Skills list, matched to the specific job Job match letter Workshops and conferences attended References, evaluations, letters of recommendation, and testimonials Letters of thanks Articles about you Stories demonstrating skills or character (preferably signed) During the interview, refer back to the portfolio any time you can. Look for opportunities to show and tell the employer what you have done. Each time, pull out a copy to show the interviewer. Have a photocopy available to leave behind. Online portfolios Online portfolios are an easy way for potential employers to view samples of your work. And that might just tip the scales in your favor. Include your portfolios web address on all job search communication. If you participate in online networking, add a link to your online portfolio. This will make it easier for your network to recommend your work to others. Dont be tempted to quickly throw an online portfolio together. You need to research your technical options. And there are a lot of them out there - from blogs to free or subscription portfolios to building your own website.Free services allow you to get up and running quickly with limited design skills. But they may come with some disadvantages They may restrict how many files you can upload as well as the type AND size of the files. They may allow limited customization. They may show ads on your blog or portfolio. (This is how some can offer it for free.) The online portfolio solution you choose will depend on your needs, time, budget, and web skills. Carefully compare features to determine which one meets your needs. Blog portfolios can be an excellent starting point, especially ifused only for that purpose. They tend to be easy to set up and use. Most allow you to organize content easily. You can also embed almost anything. Blogs are often free, but many have subscription options with advanced features. This may be a good option if you need a simple portfolio. Free or subscription-based portfolios tend to allowa wider range of file types, and larger files. These files are uploaded directly to the host site. Portfolio options are geared toward presenting graphic elements rather than text. These are ideal if you need to showcase work visually. Custom portfolios give you the most control over how your work is presented. They also require the most hands-on labor since you must design the site yourself. Free templates and tools can simplify the process. You will also need to register a domain name and host the site somewhere.

Making Things Talk with IoT

Making Things Talk with IoT Making Things Talk with IoT An argument could be made that the history of technology is the history of finding cleverer and cleverer ways of not doing stuff we used to have to do. Cars took out walking, dishwelcheshers took out dishwashing, vacuum cleaners took out brooms (Roombas took out vacuum cleaners), and Trax took out having to keep an eye on your kids. But the latest technological explosion, that Internet of Things, has an extraordinary reach when it comes to minimizing the things we have to do. Soon well never dirty our hands on a light switch, wrinkle our noses over a jug of milk thats gone bad, or decide for ourselves whether or not to turn on the AC.Its not just the Internet, or the sensors, that are letting objects tell each other what to do so we dont have to. The crucial link is the middleman between them. Companies like Synapse create those middlemen. We started out consulting, building a wireless system for someone, saysJonathan Heath, the companys product manager. We said That was really hard, what if we could do this and make it easier? Thats how SNAP came about.SNAP is platform that has given airlines new, speedier, lightning warning systems automotive factories sophisticated LED lighting controls and even allowed dairy farmers to know when their cows are in heat by sensing their gait in the pasture. Some of these customers buy what they need from Synapse, slap the modules into their design, and are mora or less done.Others need a little more help. The Smart Combiner Box controls system components of the solar field. Image SynapseShoals Technologies Group, for instance, a balance of systems provider for solar energy (that is, they deal in all the parts of solar that are not the actual photovoltaic cells), improved the connectivity of their product immeasurably by partnering with Synapse. They had a problem they were looking to solve, says Craig Goodwin, the companys Senior Product Marketing Manager. They had a combi ner box business but wanted to add string monitoring capabilities. Though they could have bought radios to go wireless, they didnt have a sensor array to monitor voltage, current, and temperature.Communicating sensors would give them greater visibility, an ability to optimize performance, and more efficiently troubleshoot problems. We built a platform that can aggregate the data and an analytical tool, says Goodwin. Technicians can now diagnose problems such as shading problems, panel cracks, strings that have gone out, and even dirty panels, earlier and from afar.Getting to that stage involved a few tricks. Large panels at an angle, with the combiner boxes underneath. Its a bit of a funky RF environment, says Heath. To overcome that hitch, they abandoned the typical routed signal path and went with a multicast system, where devices not necessarily in the path could receive and rebroadcast messages. Its counterintuitive, says Heath. The beautiful routing algorithm will route and if it fails it will reroute. Well, the timing that it took to do that wasnt the most efficient. Sending out a multicast gave redundancy and was beneficial.Synapse has similarly helped the explosion of the IoT extend to explosions. Where with Shoals they increased the efficiency of turning light to energy, with COBRA theyve helped turned energy to lightexploding light. COBRA is a pyrotechnics company who wanted to cut out the massive time and expense it takes to wire shows. They turned to SNAP to help them make a fully wireless system. At big pyrotechnics shows theyll do 1,200 to 1,600 cues they call them, says Heath. The way SNAP allows them to communicate means they can overlay commands into one big message, with no minimum fire time between cues. They can synchronize so that, once they start communicating, all the devices now know This ismy time zero. It gets really coordinated, says Heath. When the pieces of any system can talk to and monitor themselves and each other, coordination go es up, efficiency goes up, and maintenance goes down. With the right devices speaking the right language, people, and businesses, can further cut down that pesky doing stuff. As Heath puts it, companies like Synapse enable folks that are doing other things to do what they do best. Letus focus on the network and they can focus on their application.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Learn more about the latest energy technologies at ASMEs Power and Energy Conference. For Further DiscussionWe said That was really hard, what if we could do this and make it easier? Thats how SNAP came about.Jonathan Heath, product manager, SNAP

The time youre wasting on YouTube can be good for your employer

The time youre wasting on YouTube can be good for your employerThe time youre wasting on YouTube can be good for your employerEvery moment you spend away from looking at your work is a lost moment you could have been making your employer money. This is the assumption behind many alarmist headlines about the time - and, therefore, money - that employees who enjoy watching fantasy football and TV highlights waste when they watch videos unrelated to work.In the latest story of this kind, aBridge survey of 1,000 workers found that employees watched an average of 77 minutes of non-work related videos a day. Using wage data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bridge took that information one step further and calculated that these 77 minutes are costingcompanies more than$8,800for each employee and up to$44 millionper year. The benefits of hintergrund noiseBut this time is only time wasted if you assume that employees need to be spending every moment of their workday glued to their s preadsheets. For many of us, watching videos in the background at work can actually be time well spent.Studies back up that many of us actually learn best when we have background noise. New research in theJournal of Consumer Research found that moderate noise, like the level of sound you get from turning on the TV, is superior for creative thinking because its the noise level most likely to spark the abstract processing in our brains. It follows a separate study that found that white noise can improve our creativity scores.Recognizing that notlage all sound is noise helps us understand why our co-workers chatter distracts us while talking heads in the background at work do not.The benefits of being distractedOf course, these studies dont absolve slackers at work who are frittering away their days bingeing TV shows when they should be working. But even if you are watching TV directly on your screen, not just in the background, there are productivity experts who argue that doing tasks unrelated to work are key to doing work. Like elite athletes, we need timeouts from work to surf the web and look at funny YouTube videos, in order to replenish our energy for the second quarter. Our working energy is best used in spurts where we work hard on a few focused activities and then take a brief respite, Bob Kustka, the founder of a productivity and time-management firm, puts it.In other words, we cant assume that watching videos unrelated to work is a productivity killer, draining employers money. Sometimes, watching that cute bird YouTube video is exactly the break your employee needs to complete that PowerPoint presentation in time.

The In-House Advertising Agency Model

The In-House Advertising Agency ModelThe In-House Advertising Agency ModelThere are many different types of advertising agencies, including Above-The-Line (ABL), Through-The-Line (TTL), Below-The-Line (BTL), digital, financial, and healthcare. Then theres the in-house agency, which can be a mix of several of those or something completely different in its own right. Some agencies actually get their start as an in-house department, and through effort, great work, and award shows,it becomes an agency in its own right. A famous example of this is The Integer Group in Colorado, which started out as an in-house agency for Coors, but quickly graduated to do work for other clients including Starbucks, Acuvue, Victory Motorcycles, and Polaris. An in-house advertising agency is usually owned and operated by its one and only client the company doing the advertising. Instead of this company outsourcing its advertising to an agency (or these days, several agencies with different disciplines), its ad campaigns are often handled by its own in-house agency. Some advertising may leise be directed to outside agencies, but usually on a per-project basis. Or, in-house agencies will handle one area of communication, while external agencies handle the others. How In-House Agency Operates There islittle structural difference between an in-house agencyand a traditional agency that has multiple clients. In-house agencies have their own creative directors, art directors, copywriters, production experts, media buyers, account executives, and every other role youd expect to see in an agency. However, there are big differences when it comes to the actual work being produced, approval processes, hours, and workloads. For example In-house agencies work for only one client their employer. Everything they do, from websites and guerrilla to TV and direct mail, is all for that one brand.In-house agencies dont have to pitch for new business. They are given all the work they need from the compa ny that owns them.In-house agency employees have much better hours than agency employees. There is no grind, very few late nights and weekends, and the atmosphere is less hustle, and more nine-to-five.In-house agencies have fewer approval processes to go through. There is no middleman, as with an agency. Campaigns are developed hand-in-hand with the people who will ultimately approve the project, so this cuts down on wasted time and miscommunication. In-house agency employees are often paid more than their agency counterparts. Working in-house is seen as less prestigious than working at an agency, and many people do not relish the idea of working on only one product, day in, day out. So, the compensation is higher.In-house agency employees usually get much better benefits packages, as they are backed by larger corporations with much more purchasing power. This, combined with the hours and salary, is often referred to as golden handcuffs. Once you go client-side, its hard to go back to the tougher agency world that has more hours and less money. In-House Agencies Are on the Rise Corporations around the world see the many advantages of an in-house agency. Ad agencies dienstgrad a lot of money for projects, and they also charge overtime.
